Jim Smith Retires

George Gombossy sends along these photos of some ex-Courant folks attending last weekend’s retirement party for Jim Smith, executive editor of the New Britain Herald and Bristol Press.

Smith, also a former Courant journalist, retired in January and was replaced by David M. Warren on Feb. 1.

Smith is on the left in this shot. On the right is Clemson Smith Muniz and in the middle is Jon Sandberg.

Below is longtime Courant veteran Dennie Williams, right, and, second from left, is (I am now told by Henry McNulty), Reid MacCluggage, former Assistant Managing Editor and Managing Editor at the Courant and retired publisher of The Day. Between Reid and Dennis is Carol Giacomo of the New York Times editorial board.

And here is a nice shot of Dennie, who, by the way, is usually a hilarious public speaker. Gombossy adds this: “If any of you want Dennie’s hour-long speech, I am sure he can send it.”

Raycraft’s Haiti Photos In Exhibit

Some powerful and moving photographs taken by longtime Courant photojournalist Patrick Raycraft will be on exhibit next Saturday, July 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Provenance Center, 165 State Street, New London. Here’s the Facebook announcement:

While on vacation in Santo Domingo following the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, he joined the International Medical Alliance relief effort. He documented his experience by writing daily journal entries and photographing.

(This is him and me at the Manchester Community College “Evening of Fine Wines” earlier this month where I was a student manager and Cliff was a generous donor to the college fund.)

As I reported earlier, Cliff appears to be doing well.

Manchester Bureau Redux

A few current and former Manchester staffers got together at Boston Gourmet Pizza in Manchester. Kate Farrish, Stef Summers, Jim Farrell, Peter Marteka, Jesse Leavenworth, Grace Merritt, Shawn Beals, Tracy Fox and Larry Smith were there.

Marge Ruschau hosted a bunch of Ex-Courant folks (and a few still Courant folks) on Saturday night, and here are some of those who attended. Among those now shown were Barb and Ed Lafreniere, Chris and Suzanne Morrill, Matt Moser, Russ Vermilyea and Tom Krazit.

Those of you who didn’t attend were discussed at length and in embarrassing detail between bolts of horrific lightening.

Stephanie Reitz and Brady Robert Arlin Reitz

Stephanie Reitz gave birth to this handsome fella this morning at 7:22 a.m. at Hartford Hospital.

Brady Robert Arlin Reitz came out loud and a healthy at 6 lbs, 6 oz., 18 inches long

Both mother and son are doing great.

New Old Staffer

There were some funny moments, and some touching ones.

In his remarks, Jon Lender said he didn’t quite know what to say about Bobbie because she is “so weird,” or what to say about Cliff, because he is “so normal.”
