Longtime Courant copy editor Pete Tchakirides has died after a long and accomplished career. Here is his obituary.
I have to admit I did not know his first name was really John and that he was a PhD.

Sad news. Smart guy, fine editor, good sense of humor, gentle man and gentleman.
As a fellow member of the copy desk, I think I did know that his name was John (I probably saw it on a time card) and I was aware of his Ph.D. because of his copy editing work around his teaching schedule. I don’t think I knew that he had obtained much of his education at Yale and I certainly didn’t know his military background.
“Pete” was that way. He was very self-effacing and while sharing his knowledge generously and freely, he never made the recipient feel lesser or inferior in his presence. I’ll certainly miss him and I’ve shared a few thoughts for his family to start off the condolences at the funeral home’s website. I hope a few other of my colleagues will leave their thoughts and remembrances there, if it would be of comfort to “Pete’s” family.
RIP Pete … “Pete, you’re POACHING !!!!” lol … Pete and I were in Rim 5 together under Slot Lorraine Wang and early in my Courant career I yelled that at him because he went INTO MY QUEUE to start copy-editing a good story that had been assigned to ME to copy-edit … it was like that … dog-eat-dog … indefatigable-copy-editor-poach-on-voracious-copy-editor … Pete wore his shirts until paper-thin patches appeared … that’s how I knew he didn’t have a wife … God bless you, Pete … I remember once he tried to use the verb “batten” in a headline and eventually got shouted down … he was correct in his definition of the word … but all anybody had ever heard was “batten down the hatches …” so he was out-voted … like I said … dog-eat-dog …
