Those of you who are still harboring the illusion that there is a line between journalism and advertising revenue at The Hartford Courant can stop now.
Reports from the newsroom suggest that the newspaper publisher’s interest in landing the rights to broadcast UConn Women’s Basketball games has trumped the release of potentially unflattering news about the university.
I hear the paper is sitting on a story about the cost of carpeting and other furnishings for the new university president’s house. That’s the same house the university spent a ton of money on to renovate only to have the former president and his wife decline to live there.
The story is finished, but will not likely see the light of day while the paper’s companion TV station Fox61 is in the middle of an effort to win the UConn Womens Basketball broadcast rights. The Courant wouldn’t want to tick off university president Susan Herbst yet again with such a valuable commodity at risk.
