Gombossy’s Doggedness

You have to hand it to George Gombossy and his lawyer — they know how to maximize the defendant’s pain as they pursue their losing cause.

The former consumer columnist has appealed the dismissal of his original wrongful termination suit and has amended it in Superior Court. Here’s an excerpt from his long explanation of his actions:

…there is now a high likelihood that the top executives at The Courant and Fox 61 will be forced to testify under oath about their promises, ethics, and the impact advertisers have on their news decisions.

Certainly, if it happens, it will be a very entertaining trial.

Paul – you are a great journalist, and probably an incredible chef. But when it comes to legal issues I think you might want to consider the opinion of Joe Garrison, who has never lost a battle with The Courant, and is rated by his fellow lawyers as among the top three in the state.

Even a great chef can’t make foie gras out of lunchmeat. So it could be with Garrison on the Gombossy case. My long-practiced journalist nerve senses the initial dismissal of your claim as a Garrison loss — of a battle, if not the rest of the war. But I have also said, and will repeat, that by fighting at all you are helping keep the management’s poorer impulses in check and making them wary of pressuring writers to cater to advertisers, lest the public see them for what they are. (If Garrison does manage to pull your chips out of the fire, I will be glad to proclaim him a miracle worker.)

Its not only my chips my friend that is on the line.
