Job Summary
The Assistant Editor, College Sports, edits and posts content in all of the college sports sections of ESPN.com. This position requires a passion for and in-depth knowledge of college sports, with a background in editing and writing about college sports.
Job Responsibilities
Assistant Editor is a non-managing job, responsible for editing content in a specific page, section or area of ESPN.com’s site. Alone or with other sources, the Assistant Editor works to expand and make coverage more comprehensive, using a multitude of platforms, including video and audio; works with staff writers and freelancers; and edits multiple stories, among other duties. Depending upon specific coverage area or beat, the job might include responsibility for the daily content and regular “refreshes” of an assigned sports page or area of the ESPN.com site.
Required Qualifications
• Typically 2+ years of editorial and reporting experience
• Has competence in writing, editing and reporting
• Has understanding of the market positioning and strategies of assigned sport / event / area
• Has ability to follow and shape stories at various stages of development using various means of presentation
• Has news journalism experience and news judgment; understands assigned sport from a journalistic point of view
• Has advanced understanding of HTML and related web-authoring tools and software
• Has strong English grammar and excellent organizational skills
• Has familiarity with most major Internet search engines and fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, communications or a related field.
