I don’t know whether this story by George Gombossy should be entitled:
Courant Soaks Owners of Foreclosed Property
or
This Is What Happens When You Fire Your Consumer Columnist.
In either case, the issue George raises here is a valid one, his lawsuit with the newspaper notwithstanding. Given the state of the newspaper industry and The Courant’s apparent indifference to its status as a guardian of ethical values, it would be odd for the company not to capitalize fully on government- and court-mandated advertisers.
And it seems that, judging from the paper’s recent objections to ending the mandate (even when it has outlived its utility), the industry has no objection to such government practice when newspapers are the beneficiaries.

What, no mattresses to write about today?
How long should we wait for Rick Green to write about the issue of his employer making millions from government mandated advertising.
Oh, I forgot, Rick knows what could happen to him if he writes negatively about major advertisers…so what does he do? He makes light of the fact that hundreds of foreclosure victims are getting ripped off. Very Nice Mr. Green.
George Gombossy
In addition to not having mattresses to write about yesterday nor were there any press releases from the AG’s office George could copy and paste and slap a “by-line” either, or something about propane, CL&P or BOA. Of course George never took on anything that could be remotely critical of the Courant itself in his often self remarked upon 40 year run there.
I honestly wish you were still sitting next to me George and doing the great work that you have always done. Your news blog is a pleasure. Now, please join me in having a sense of humor. But, since you mention it, I’m actually quite happy that my employer makes money off government advertising. That’s how I get to do my job and write columns. Let me know when Inspector Farrell is going on another raid. Say, isn’t he running for something?
Rick – I think you mean government MANDATED advertising. Still feel all good and fuzzy about that? George
