When Non-Plagiarism Is Just As Good

Here’s a link to the Hartford Business Journal’s story about the JI lawsuit, which asserts Editor & Publisher’s claim that it could set a record for monetary damages in such a case.

The JI wants $150,000 for each of the stories ripped off by the Courant, which E&P works out to $1.65 million for 11 stories cited in the suit. It does not deduct for the 11th, non-plagiarized, Larry Smith story, however — the only story, oddly, dated after the Courant ran its public apology for stealing another paper’s work.

Which raises another ironic point.

If, as the JI’s lawyer says, it was the Courant’s continued plagiarism after the apology that prompted the JI’s suit; and that last, 11th story was not plagiarized; then a non-plagiarized story prompted a plagiarism suit.

Of course that doesn’t diminish the offense — at least not much.
