JI’s Plagiarism Suit To Be Amended

Chris Powell, managing editor of the Journal Inquirer, informed us today that the reference to Larry Smith’s story in the JI’s plagiarism lawsuit against the Courant will be removed. He also expects to get in touch with Larry or send him a note. (We don’t know what he plans to say, but we hope an apology will be involved.)

The lawsuit, as regular visitors to this site know, cited 11 stories that the JI said were plagiarized by the Courant. One of those was by Larry. Larry said that not only did he not copy information from the JI, he, in fact, covered the same meeting the JI reporter did and was sitting in front of him.

Larry told us he was disgusted by the allegation. We continue to hope that Chris addresses the matter in his appearance Wednesday on WNPR’s “Where We Live” program.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the JI told Editor & Publisher that the JI’s suit is seeking $150,000 for each story the JI says was plagiarized.

I trust the apology will be clearly spoken on WNPR and recorded, and that it is then written and signed and hand delivered to Mr. Smith and his attorney.
What a terrible disservice to lump such a hard working, outstanding, and dignified journalist in such a nefarious lawsuit.
