Now That’s A Contract

The Laurel has an interesting snippet to the effect that Fox 61 reporter Laurie Perez has a contract that guarantees her the lead story on any day she works.

That’s an interesting arrangement, and one I never heard of before. Can you imagine 1) if Courant reporters had contracts, and 2) if they guaranteed them a front page story every day?

Courant reporters are expected to find their own front page stories, for one thing. And Courant editors traditionally reserve the right to pick the reporter for ongoing important stories, usually based on that reporter’s skill set, beat contacts, knowlege of the subject, reliability, speed on deadline, etc.

The Fox arrangement must make for a fascinating editor-reporter relationship; but doesn’t sound like it puts the viewer’s interests first.
