Paul Bass On Journalistic Survival

I am always enlightened and entertained when Paul Bass, editor of the New Haven Independent, has something to say. He shows up as a commentator on NPR pretty often, is a lecturer at Yale, and used to write a great column for NE Magazine when The Courant had a Sunday magazine. (I liked him, among other reasons, because he wasn’t afraid to rip into Sen. Joe Lieberman.)

Bass was recently written up in the Yale Daily News, explaining how his online publication has managed to survive the recent downturn. The NHI is, in fact, a national model for the future on online, nonprofit journalism; and Bass is emerging as an influential representative of cutting-edge journalistic practice.

Here’s the kind of thing he is likely to say (and, in fact, did say in the Yale piece) in print or on video at his signature “compost heap” podium:

“The only people who think journalism is dying are newspaper reporters embedded in the funeral parlor,” Bass said.

The piece also talks about the New Haven Advocate, owned by Tribune.

  1. 1 T A. Best

The Hartford Guardian, also started by another former Hartford Courant reporter, began the trend in Connecticut with nonprofit online journalism, way before the New Haven Independent.

AnnMarie Adams first set the standard. Get it right now. I think Paul Bass is great. But he didn’t start that trend. He gets more recognition and praise because he’s well-known in the CT journalistic circle. And he’s a white male.

    Let’s keep it real.

    Your’s truly,
    A fan, TB.

  2. 2 Are you kidding?

Bass’ recognition has nothing to do with his skin pigmentation.

The recognition has come because he has a record of service and success.

In my opinion AnnMarie (I remember it as Ann Marie) can claim neither.

It’s interesting to see that Ann Marie continues to play the race card.

The writer is not necessarily Ann Marie herself, so referring to her playing of the race card may be presumptuous. On the other hand, the writer did toss it on the table, but failed to include that, like Joe Lieberman, Paul Bass is Jewish. In the ridiculous and bigoted game of stereotyping, doesn’t that sort of balance him out?
I take the T A. Best remark simply to say that the Guardian is under-recognized, not that Bass is undeserving of what he has achieved. I think the length and breadth and scope of the influence of the New Haven Independent may be the determining factor in its recognition. And the same would apply to the Guardian.

    Nuff said on this, no?
