The Competition For Local News

Google “West Hartford news” and what do you get at the top of the search?

… not The Courant.

Lon Seidman and Anna Sales, co-founders of the LocalOnlineNews.TV site have paid to be first in line.

It is, I suspect, a sign of more to come. As The Courant steps back from local coverage and loses the loyalty of more and more local readers, little sites will stake out their territory at the big paper’s expense.

D0 their sites provide coverage as comprehensive as what readers might get from The Courant? Maybe not yet, but it is intensely local; and local coverage builds loyalty.

In the days when The Courant was in its prime, the response to such a threat would have been swift and aggressive and expensive. Maybe not so anymore.

You said: ” … but it is intensely local; and local coverage builds loyalty.” If THC didn’t learn that from fighting the JI all these years, I don’t expect it to learn the lesson now. As long as all THC is equipped to offer by way of local news is, effectively, community meeting notices, I fear the trend may be irreversible — and fatal.
