Those of you who are looking for signs of a recovery in ad revenue for newspapers should avert their eyes from this report. It says that overall ad revenue will continue its fall — even compared to last year’s miserable showing.
Of course, an overall decline does not mean every case, and perhaps The Courant will fare better.
Meanwhile, papers are raising their subscription prices, making circulation revenue a larger percentage of overall revenue. This could be a problem for papers losing circulation, no? And charging more for a paper that has less news each day is also problematic.
Unless readers don’t notice or care.
Because they aren’t reading the paper as much.
Because there is less in it.
And it costs more.
And then the paper has to lay off more people.
So it produces less original news.
So people don’t read it as much.
