Of the many takes on the Courant’s plagiarism scandal, I think I like this one by Dean Starkman of CJR the best. I not only like the way he presents the facts (which are pretty well established now) but his tone.
Starkman ends with this line:
“… news executives waving the flag of ‘strict journalistic ethics’ and ‘sacred’ credibility should remember that these values don’t come cheap.”
To that I would only like to add one observation: An organization’s integrity and the strength of its principles are most often defined by how it behaves in difficult times.
