To The Courant Rank And File

I had always thought it went without saying, but I feel a need to say this anyway:

The Hartford Courant Alumni Association and Refugee Camp respects the many fine journalists who currently work at the Courant, wishes them only the best and does not intend for any criticism of the paper’s direction to be a reflection on their work.

I know it is tough to work at a newspaper that is getting so much negative attention lately (and there’s more to come), but be assured that those of us now on the outside understand your challenges, feel as bad about the paper’s demise as you do (almost, anyway), and admire your ability to keep producing fine work even in the face of such withering criticism and vanishing resources.

I couldn’t agree more. The journalists at the Courant — those who are left, at least — are talented, hard-working and hold the highest ethical and professional standards. I can say this because I worked with many of them for years. The astonishing errors of judgment by Courant management that rightfully merited the public flogging of the past few weeks should not be a reflection of the editorial staff’s extraordinary efforts to continue to inform the public.
