Stephanie Reitz reports that she got a call the other day from a woman who was the subject of a story she’d written in Avon in 2002,. The caller wanted to suggest a follow-up. She didn’t know Stephanie had long since left the Courant.
She continues:
“I didn’t know this, but she mentioned that if you go to “Contact Us” at the bottom of www.courant.com, there’s a newsroom employees search function — disingenuously claiming, “It’s updated regularly” — in which many of us are still listed as employees, including me in my Avon gig (five years after I left it for the Knight-Wallace Fellowship). Apparently we’re all immortal in Courant.com land!”
I was able to find myself there, Mark Pazniokas, Steve Wilder, and Michael Regan (who is listed as an assistant managing editor) before I stopped looking.
It’s likely list will be updated (and greatly shortened) soon – maybe even eliminated — when the new website is built out. In the meantime it is merely evidence of how overworked the web producers are, and/or how many parts of the website are simply forgotten because they don’t rank on the priority list of things to take care of.

I had reported this in January, after a futile attempt one weekend to contact someone at the paper about a mistake in John Updike’s obit that we ran online. Went searching around in the staff list and found myself, even though I had been laid off since July. Was told that the web people knew the list was seriously out-of-date but were too busy to fix it anytime soon. Apparently that has not changed, and that’s sad. And frustrating.
In my last month at the paper (Aug 08), I found (and reported) an online reference to Craig Baggott. Nuf sed.
Maybe we still work at the paper.
To be fair to the news Web staff, this was never their responsibility. Like the phone directory, it was supposed to be handled by the business side. That staff has been drastically reduced.
