Learning To Adjust

New Interim (Maybe Permanent) Editor Naedine Hazell is continuing her drive to bring all Courant reporters into the Internet Age.

She’s lining them up for training in Assembler, the proprietary content management tool used to produce Courant.com.

This is a smart and efficient move, particularly if the organization is going to evolve into a web-first operation, which, technologically, it is not. Why not write the copy in the appropriate system, instead of emailing it in?

Besides that, it will be good for reporters to see a little code and start getting comfortable with the web back shop. It will help them understand the operation a little better.

Way to go, Naedine. This move was too long overdue.

And besides that, it’ll help pave the way for the “one-newsroom” system that will result in more job cuts at the Courant, especially among origination and copy editors. After most of the editors have been rendered redundant, the reporters will be replaced with self-employed freelancers, working for a pittance, who upload their copy to Chicago. Way to go, Naedine! As your predecessor said, “Keep it fun, keep it new!”

Ignorance is bliss — until the unemployment check runs out.
