Colin McEnroe is having a variant of the pipe dream many of us unemployed journalists have about starting a new kind of news service.
Speaking as an unemployed journalist who is currently enrolled in a culinary arts program, I like Colin’s idea. It has the right community feel, a food component, and reminds me of my days as a weekly newspaper editor in Belleville, New Jersey. We had a store-front office on Washington Avenue (the town’s main street) and frequently got walk-ins from folks on their way to the dry cleaners or library. Most of them were nut cases who wanted help with something or had an axe to grind; but that’s what local newspapers do.
Are there any ex-journos out there with expertise in market research, business administration, real estate and subscription sales? We’d need some of that.
What we really need most, of course, is a benefactor.
Seriously, any potential benefactors out there should feel free to contact me. Within about two days, I can probably have 50 journalists ready to get to work on a start-up. The nut cases would soon follow.
