Paul Bass, the brains and personality behind the New Haven Independent, is looking for reporters. Here’s the note he sent me:
I have a couple of slots open at a new edition of the Independent that’ll be starting mid-year in the lower Naugatuck Valley. Looking for people with experience reporting there.
The New Haven Independent is an online publication run on a non-profit basis. It is a damn smart operation.

I’d rather hand wash port-a-toilets after a biker festival than work for an unaccountable rag that is only interested in furthering an agenda under the pretense of real journalism. Take the job if you have to, but be prepared to trade in your journalistic soul.
Talk at you later.
Enough already with the “furthering an agenda” nonsense. Anyone who ever actually worked at a paper would fall down laughing at that idea… we could never agree on anything more complex than what to order for lunch…and not always that, either.
I suggest that Bill Kanugie and others who agree with him look in the mirror, where they actually WILL see a person with “an agenda.” Just because you, as a reader, don’t agree with what you are reading does not mean the reporter who dug up the facts and worked hard to present them or the paper itself is biased….but it may well mean that YOU are. Bias, and imaginary agendas, are in the eye of the beholder, Bill.
That’s a good line about the biker festival. Wish I had come up with that.
