Volunteer Work — The New Employment

John Ward has discerned a new truth about life during the Great Recession:  “volunteering is the new employment. ”

At any rate, John reports he is  now volunteering as a writing coach at Middlesex Community College, helping in class, at the journalism club, and editing the student newspaper.

This is exactly in line with the Harvard Business Review article Carlos Cunha put us onto the other day, about finding useful, productive and rewarding activity during this employment drought.

Speaking of volunteering, I got training today to return as a tutor of Hartford third graders in the ConnectiKids program at Asylum Hill Congregational Church. (Denis Horgan is a longtime tutor there.)
They could use a few more people from now until June 3. The training takes less than two hours and then you commit to an hour and a half a week.
Anyone who is interested can e-mail me at katefarrish@live.com or call John, Patty or Ricardo at 860-522-8710. Tell ‘em Kate sent you.
