The phone calls began last night, I hear.
Loretta Waldman, a veteran reporter, iTowns blogger and mother of a young daughter, got one and has been laid off.
Jesse Leavenworth, a long-time veteran and versatile (and very funny) journalist, got one.
Judy Prato, the best damn baker in the building,…
David Funkhouser, the environmental writer,…
and Owen Walker from the library.
More will emerge throughout the day, I guess.
Some of these folks had perhaps hoped to leave in the last buyout, but were unable. Either way, my heart aches for these people, who poured their lives into the paper for many, many years.
I’m sure everyone’s does.
Those with something to say may do so here. … or any way you prefer.

Matt Eagan got the call … six weeks before his wife’s due date for their first child.

You write this site as if the news department is all that exists at the Courant. If that weren’t true, you’d have all the others listed on your “roster”. You’d know that those who help put together and print the paper, and those who help pay all the bills are also being let go. These people you may not know, but are affected by what you write here. Let’s open our eyes to a little more than your own little corner of the world.
I worked at The Courant from ’81 to ’84, and try to keep up. This is tragic news today. I heard that Mark Pazniokas was also laid off, a horrible decision on every level. It’s all so sickening.
I’m so sorry to hear about this! I was let go by the Denver Post exactly a week ago and am still a little in shock, but I’m starting to feel glad that I’m not in what’s left of the newsroom. I can’t picture the Courant newsroom as it must look now, and I don’t think I’d want to see it without all the people on these lists. Hang in there, folks, and hopefully we’ll catch an upswing — and find ourselves doing something unexpected and rewarding in a different way.
Ingrid Muller
That is one damn talented list of people.
If “nobody’s safe” would like to send me the names of our laid-off fellow employees outside the newsroom, I’ll be glad to publish them. They are also welcome at the Refugee Camp.
This site has, since its inception, been devoted to veterans of the newsroom primarily, but I think we recognize our kinship with the folks in finance, advertising, circulation, marketing and facilities upkeep. We recognize that we all contributed to a once-great newspaper and that it is being taken from us incrementally — and harshly on days such as these.
Please, join us, and be welcome.
