Say, anyone know what the circulation of Ye Olde Courant is these days? The little blurb on page one says the paper and webpage are viewed by 800,000 people a week, but that seems way low.
At its height the paper was running 225,000 daily and 300,000 Sunday — which, pre-web, would be over 1.6 million a week. Could circulation now actually be less than half of that? And if anyone at all is looking at the web, the newspaper number must be much lower. 800,000 a week?
Not usually the thing to lowball circulation numbers.
(There’s some meat to the question in that Tribune believes in the long-outdated saw that news staffing should follow circulation at 1 person per thousand.)

I have figures that say for zones 1 – 6, on Sunday, there is a circulation of about 247,000. Daily, est. 205,000.
I don’t know if that includes other papers circulated statewide, etc. I suspect not.
Hi Paul.
Interesting. That Sunday figure reflects a huge loss, but which sounds right from what we’ve been hearing. The daily figure sounds too high. We were announced at less than 200,000 (186,000 was the ABC number, I think, buoyed up by the big Thursday edition from an otherwise daily average in the low 170′s) when I left a few years ago and the paper surely hasn’t grown.
Those numbers would give a weekly total of 1,477,000 before any web viewers were counted in.
To get to the “read by 800,000 Connecticut residents every week in print and online” involves a severe whittling down from that figure. That front-page blurb doesn’t say we sell that many copies but seems to note the “reader per copy” number. Plus the web. I can’t believe that the paper’s down to 100,000 daily (which would make the daily sunday number 847,000, still without the web.) Maybe I’m reading it all wrong. Could they mean 800,000 every day, which would argue that the web gets well over 600,000 hits? Dunno.

On the daily figure, I did a very rough addition of the Thursday numbers.
The online measurements are harder to pin down than the print ones. I don’t know whether the 800,000 includes “unique visitors” to the site or what.
