There will be what Cliff Teutsch calls an “informal” staff goodbye party Thursday evening at the Red Rock. Everyone is invited.
Dennie Williams said he will be there and observes that Kenney’s (what most of us still call it) is probably too small for the gathering. They ought to move it to the Armory, he said.
Or perhaps the crowd will bring us a little comfort, for surely this gathering is going to be a difficult one. Many of us will try not to let our concern for our co-workers show too much — as to make them feel worse than they already do; and I fear the event will have the scent of defeat and regret, despite our efforts to look beyond the wreckage to an appreciation of what we were able to do — until we weren’t able anymore.
None of this is reason enough not to show, though, is it? We owe each other that.

Several of us who’ve left The Courant over the past few years get together occasionally. We’ll be gathering next on Tuesday, Aug. 5 starting at 6 at Luce on Main Stret in Middletown. Everyone is welcome. No matter what we’ve gone on to, we all have something in common: we all share the same loss — a profession we loved.
What I am, I suspect, many more will be in two years or so: a once-proud Courant journalist who has no regrets about my separation, but who nonetheless wants to remember Kenny’s for what it was when it actually was Kenny’s.
So I won’t be there Thursday night. But I do wish all the newly coined Courant expats well and welcome those who’d like to keep in touch to do so. This Alum Assn and Refugee Camp is a very nice start.
I’ll raise a glass from afar!
Cheers and cheer to all of you. Miss you!
It was a fine time at Kenney’s and especially heartwarming to have all the folks still in the trenches show up to ship us out in proper manner. I’ll take an unofficial sendoff any day. I’m just sorry, after compiling hundreds of pages over the years, Greg Morago didn’t get one of his own. Conversely, I suggested a USA-Today-style briefs page with an item for each of the departing 60 whose years at the paper combined probably exceeded 1,000.

Just last week I was at Kenney’s/Red Rock during a visit to Connecticut. When I was there, I couldn’t help but think of all of you and the folks at the Courant who were going through such a difficult time. Our friend at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution are going through the same thing right now, as well. I promise you there is a good life outside of daily newspapers and plenty of opportunities for people who can quickly and concisely turn the complicated into the straightforward. If I can be of any help from down here, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m at dtofig@gmail.com!
Think of our Courant family often! (See what’s up with the Murphy/Tofig household at tofig.blogspot.com!
